This guide covers the fastest way to level Mining to max. Mining is closely tied to Forging since you'll be smelting ores into bars, so consider leveling both skills together.
Overview
The optimal Mining training path changes based on your level, pickaxe, and whether you want to actively click or AFK. The general strategy is:
- Mine Coal and Copper to level 30, upgrading pickaxes along the way.
- Mine Gold from level 30 onward as a solid, consistent method (~32k-40k XP/h).
- At level 60+ with a Promethium Pickaxe or better, switch to the 3-Iron spot for ~48k-72k XP/h.
- At level 80+, switch to Silver at the 3-spot for the fastest XP in the game (~72k-162k XP/h).
- Meteor is available at any level as an AFK option whenever one spawns.
Pickaxe Upgrades
Upgrading your pickaxe is the single biggest speed increase. Always prioritize getting the best pick you can use.
| Pickaxe | Mining Level | Speed Buff | How to Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze Pickaxe | 1 | 10% | Given at start |
| Iron Pickaxe | 10 | 20% | Forge or trade |
| Silver Pickaxe | 20 | 30% | Forge or trade |
| Gold Pickaxe | 30 | 40% | Forge or trade |
| Promethium Pickaxe | 50 | 50% | Forge or trade |
| Meteor Pickaxe | 50 | 60% (bonus on Meteors) | Meteor drop |
| Titanium Pickaxe | 65 | 60% | Forge or trade |
| Ancient Pickaxe | 75 | 70% | Forge or trade |
The Meteor Pickaxe matches Titanium speed on normal ores but is faster specifically on Meteors. It's worth keeping one for Meteor events even after upgrading to Ancient Pickaxe.
Phase 1: Levels 1-30 (Coal, Copper, Iron)
Start at the Mine east of Everbrook. Mine whatever is available and upgrade your pickaxe at every opportunity.
| Level | Ore | XP | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coal / Copper | 10 / 15 | Mine 1st floor | Copper is slightly better XP |
| 5 | Iron | 40 | Mine 2nd floor | Big XP jump; switch to Iron when available |
| 15 | Silver | 90 | Mine 2nd floor / Beach | Slow at low levels but good XP per ore |
| 30 | Gold | 500 | Mine 2nd floor / Beach / Sewer | Transition to Phase 2 |
Tips for Phase 1:
- Smelt your ores into bars at the Furnace (1st floor) for Forging XP as you go.
- The Orebar Potion (level 20 Brewing) auto-smelts Copper, Iron, Silver, and Gold into bars while mining, giving both Mining and Forging XP.
- Pick up Mold Rock drops for free Rockshrooms (Farming).
- Upgrade pickaxes as soon as you hit the required levels - the speed difference is massive.
Phase 2: Levels 30-60 (Gold)
At level 30 you unlock Gold ore (500 XP each). This is the bread-and-butter method for mid-game Mining.
| Level | Pickaxe | XP/h |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | Gold Pickaxe | ~32,100 |
| 40 | Gold Pickaxe | ~33,600 |
| 50 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~37,900 |
| 60 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~40,000 |
Gold is found on the Mine 2nd floor, at the Beach, and in the Sewer. The Beach has the most accessible Gold nodes.
Why Gold?
- 500 XP per ore is a large chunk - each mine feels rewarding.
- Available at multiple locations so you're rarely competing for nodes.
- Gold Bars are valuable for Forging weapons, armour, and tools.
- The Mining Potion (level 10 Brewing) doubles ore and XP, pushing Gold to 1,000 XP per mine.
Phase 3: Levels 60+ (3-Iron Spot)
This is where active Mining becomes significantly faster than Gold. The Promethium Pickaxe unlocks at level 50, but Iron doesn't hit minimum tick speed until level 60 with it (6 ticks). At that point, the 3-Iron spot on the Mine 2nd floor lets you cycle between three Iron rocks with no downtime - by the time you mine the third rock, the first has respawned.
| Level | Pickaxe | Iron XP/h | vs Gold XP/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~26,200 | ~37,900 (Gold still better) |
| 60 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~48,000 | ~40,000 |
| 65 | Titanium Pickaxe | ~57,600 | ~42,000 |
| 75 | Ancient Pickaxe | ~72,000 | ~48,000 |
Why switch from Gold at 60?
- Iron at min ticks with a Prom pick (48k XP/h) beats Gold (40k XP/h) at the same level.
- Before level 60, Gold is still faster - don't switch early.
- Upgrading to a Titanium Pickaxe at 65 pushes Iron to 57.6k XP/h.
- With an Ancient Pickaxe at 75, Iron reaches 72k XP/h - nearly double Gold's rate.
- The 3-rock cycling means zero idle time between mines.
- Mining Potion still doubles everything, so active Iron with a potion is the fastest mid-level method.
Phase 4: Levels 80+ (3-Silver Spot - Fastest XP)
At level 80+ with a Promethium Pickaxe or better, Silver begins to overtake Iron at the 3-spot because Silver gives 90 XP per ore (vs Iron's 40 XP) and the tick speed catches up at high levels.
| Level | Pickaxe | Silver XP/h | Iron XP/h (for comparison) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~40,500 | ~48,000 |
| 80 | Ancient Pickaxe | ~72,000 | ~72,000 |
| 90 | Promethium Pickaxe | ~58,900 | ~48,000 |
| 90 | Ancient Pickaxe | ~162,000 | ~72,000 |
At level 90+ with an Ancient Pickaxe, Silver at the 3-spot reaches ~162,000 XP/h - the fastest Mining XP in the game by a huge margin. Silver hits 4 ticks at this point, same as Iron, but each ore gives more than double the XP.
Why Silver overtakes Iron:
- Iron caps at 40 XP per ore regardless of level. Silver gives 90 XP per ore.
- At level 80+, Silver's tick count drops low enough that the XP-per-ore advantage dominates.
- By level 90 with Ancient pick, Silver reaches the same 4-tick minimum as Iron but at 90 XP instead of 40 XP.
Ride Silver at the 3-spot all the way to max.
AFK Option: Meteor
Meteors spawn randomly and can be mined by anyone. They give mixed ores (Coal through Ancient) and are a solid AFK method since you just click and wait.
- Meteors are the only source of Ancient Ore before completing the Volcanic Bridge Quest.
- Use the Meteor Pickaxe for bonus speed on Meteors specifically.
- Meteor speed reduces every 10 Mining levels (unlike normal ores which reduce every 2 levels).
- Great for passive XP while doing other things, but not as fast as active Iron/Silver mining.
Potions
Two Brewing potions are essential for Mining efficiency:
| Potion | Brewing Level | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Mining Potion | 10 | Doubles ore mined and XP gained (not on Meteor) |
| Orebar Potion | 20 | Auto-smelts Copper/Iron/Silver/Gold into bars while mining, giving Forging XP |
The Mining Potion is the single biggest XP boost for Mining. All the XP/h numbers in this guide are without potions - with a Mining Potion active, double every figure.
Summary
| Phase | Levels | Method | XP/h (Best Available Pick) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1-30 | Coal / Copper / Iron | Varies | Upgrade picks ASAP |
| 2 | 30-60 | Gold | ~32,100-40,000 | Gold Pick at 30, Prom Pick at 50 |
| 3 | 60-80 | Iron (3-spot) | ~48,000-72,000 | Prom at 60, Titanium at 65, Ancient at 75 |
| 4 | 80+ to Max | Silver (3-spot) | ~72,000-162,000 | Ancient Pick; fastest XP in the game |
| AFK | Any | Meteor | Varies | Use Meteor Pickaxe for bonus speed |
Bottom line: Mine Gold from 30-60, switch to the 3-Iron spot at 60+ with a Prom/Ancient pick, then 3-Silver spot at 80+ for the fastest XP to max. Use Mining Potions to double everything.
