Scimitars are Slash-type melee weapons in FlatMMO. They share the Slash attack type with Swords, which have lower damage at the cost of requiring basic components to forge. Scimitars are only outclassed in Melee by Spears (a Stab attack type) due to their reach. Enemies weak to slash type damage are particularly susceptible to these weapons.
They are more difficult to craft requiring some luck to get the ingredients for, but offer big bonuses over regular swords. There is a Chest in Pirate Isle that drops Scimitars. This chest can be opened after killing the 2 Pirates on the Lower Deck at the same time. Between the Pirates and the Upper Pirates drops, getting a Scimitar with Combat is quite common.
Another common way to obtain Scimitars is the Dock Haven Stall which gives you a chance at all the Scimitars.

Forging
Learning to make scimitars can be done by reading the Scimitar Assembly Notes after looting them from the Chest. This chest can be opened after killing the 2 Pirates on the Lower Deck at the same time.
After doing all this you can take any sword to the Anvil and click on the sword (you will get a confirmation message) to receive your blade of the same material. One of 2 Forging ingredients needed. The other is a Scimitar Handle which can be purchased, stolen from the previously mentioned chest, or dropped by Pirates and Upper Pirates.
Forging a scimitar awards the exact same XP as forging a sword does, allowing players to double their forging XP when forging them. Players start by forging bars into a sword for their first XP drop. Players then convert that sword into a blade and combine it with the scimitar handle to get their scimitar and second XP drop.

Comparison with Swords
Swords are the other Slash-type weapon. They deal less damage than scimitars at every tier but are easier to forge.

Scimitars consistently deal +2 more damage than swords of the same tier, but swords are simpler and cheaper to forge (15 bars vs handle + blade).
