This guide covers the fastest way to level Forging to max. Forging is closely tied to Mining since you need ores to smelt, so the two skills are best trained together (see Mining - Guide).
Overview
The fastest way to level Forging is not to sit at the Furnace and Anvils all day. Instead, the most efficient strategy is to use Orebar Potions while Mining, which automatically smelt Copper, Iron, Silver, and Gold ore into bars as you mine them. This lets you train Mining and Forging at the same time with no extra effort.
The general strategy is:
- Use Orebar Potions while mining Iron at the 3-Iron spot (level 60+ with a Promethium Pickaxe or better).
- Once you can mine Silver at max speed (level 80+ with an Ancient Pickaxe), switch to the 3-Silver spot with Orebar Potions for the fastest combined Mining + Forging XP in the game.
- Smelt and smith any leftover ores from Meteors (Gold, Silver, Iron, etc.) whenever you collect them.
- For high-tier bars (Promethium, Titanium, Ancient), smelt manually at the Furnace and smith items as needed.
Orebar Potion Strategy (Fastest XP/h)
The Orebar Potion is a Brewing potion that automatically smelts Copper, Iron, Silver, and Gold ore into bars as you mine them. Each ore you mine is instantly converted into a bar, giving you both Mining XP and Forging smelt XP simultaneously. This is the single most efficient way to train Forging because you are not spending any extra time at the Furnace.
How it works: With an active Orebar Potion, every ore you mine is auto-smelted into a bar and you receive Forging smelt XP. No Coal or other fuel is needed - the potion handles the conversion entirely on its own.
Best ore to mine with Orebar:
| Ore | Mining Level | Mining XP | Forging XP (auto-smelt) | Recommended Setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | 5 | 40 | 25 | 3-Iron spot, level 60+ with Promethium Pickaxe |
| Silver | 15 | 90 | 40 | 3-Silver spot, level 80+ with Ancient Pickaxe |
| Gold | 30 | 500 | 60 | Wherever available |
The 3-Iron and 3-Silver spots refer to clusters of three rocks that can be cycled without waiting for respawns. See the Mining - Guide for full details on these spots and XP rates.
Silver at max speed is the best overall method. At level 80+ with an Ancient Pickaxe, you earn massive Mining XP and 40 Forging XP per ore, all while barely touching the Furnace.
Combining Orebar + Mining Potion
For maximum efficiency, use an Orebar Potion and a Mining Potion at the same time. The Mining Potion doubles the ore and Mining XP you receive per rock, and since the Orebar Potion auto-smelts each ore, you also receive double the bars and double the Forging XP. This is the fastest possible way to train both skills simultaneously.
Meteor Ores
Meteors drop a mix of ores including Gold, Silver, Iron, and others. Any ores you collect from Meteors can be smelted at the Furnace for additional Forging XP. Since Meteor ores are essentially free, always smelt them when you get a chance.
Smelting Materials
For manual smelting at the Furnace, here are the material requirements for each bar:
| Bar | Smelt Level | Smelt XP | Ore | Coal | Charcoal | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze Bar | 1 | 10 | 1 Copper | 1 | - | - |
| Iron Bar | 5 | 25 | 1 Iron | 1 | - | - |
| Silver Bar | 15 | 40 | 1 Silver | 2 | - | - |
| Gold Bar | 30 | 60 | 1 Gold | 3 | - | - |
| Promethium Bar | 50 | 150 | 1 Promethium | 10 | 5 | - |
| Titanium Bar | 65 | 250 | 1 Titanium | 25 | 10 | - |
| Ancient Bar | 75 | 500 | 1 Ancient Ore | 50 | 25 | 1 Lava Bucket |
Getting Charcoal: Made at the Charcoal Kiln on the second floor of the Mine. Each Charcoal costs 50 Woodchips and 600 Coins. Woodchips are a byproduct of Woodcutting.
Getting Lava Buckets: Requires a Graphite Bucket (crafted from 10 Graphite at level 70 Crafting) filled with lava. Lava Buckets are consumed when smelting Ancient Bars, so you need one per bar.
What to Smith
All smithing recipes within the same metal tier give the same Forging XP per bar used. A Bronze Sword (15 bars, 375 XP) gives exactly 25 XP per bar, same as Bronze Arrowheads (1 bar, 25 XP). So there is no XP advantage to any particular recipe - smith whatever you actually need.
Recommended: Upgrade your pickaxes and axes, forge Armour sets for combat, or make Necklaces from your gems. Since XP per bar is the same regardless of what you smith, there is no penalty for making useful gear instead of grinding one recipe.
Arrowheads for Archery: While arrowheads are not better XP than other recipes, they are worth stockpiling over time for Archery training. High-level Archery requires large quantities of arrows, and having a supply of arrowheads ready saves time later. Since XP per bar is identical either way, making arrowheads when you do not need other items is a smart long-term investment.
| Arrowheads (10x) | Smith Level | XP | Bars | XP/Bar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1 | 25 | 1 Bronze Bar | 25 |
| Iron | 5 | 45 | 1 Iron Bar | 45 |
| Silver | 15 | 72 | 1 Silver Bar | 72 |
| Gold | 25 | 107 | 1 Gold Bar | 107 |
| Promethium | 40 | 184 | 1 Promethium Bar | 184 |
| Titanium | 50 | 348 | 1 Titanium Bar | 348 |
| Ancient | 60 | 988 | 1 Ancient Bar | 988 |
High-Tier Forging (Promethium, Titanium, Ancient)
The Orebar Potion does not work on Promethium, Titanium, or Ancient ores, so these must be smelted manually at the Furnace.
Promethium (level 50+): Mined in the Mine and Hell. Requires 10 Coal + 5 Charcoal per bar.
Titanium (level 65+): Mined in Hell and from Meteors. Requires 25 Coal + 10 Charcoal per bar. Fuel costs are significant, so stockpile Coal and Charcoal beforehand.
Ancient (level 75+): Mined in the Volcano (after the Volcanic Bridge Quest) and from Meteors. Requires 50 Coal, 25 Charcoal, and 1 Lava Bucket per bar. The most expensive bars to smelt but also the highest XP at 500 smelt + 988 smith (arrowheads) = 1,488 total XP per bar. Ancient smithing also requires the Titanium counterpart of any item you want to forge (except arrowheads).
Other Useful Recipes
Glass (level 1, 2 XP): Smelted from Sand. Low XP but needed for Vials used in Brewing. The Huge Sandsmelt Potion speeds this up 25x.
Necklaces (level 20-70, 107 XP each): Require an Enchanted Gem (see Enchantment) and a Gold Bar. Good use for gems you find while Mining, and the necklaces provide useful Accuracy bonuses.
Treasure Chest Keys (level 50, 535-635 XP): Require 5 Gold Bars plus a gem for upgraded keys. Useful if you have Treasure Maps from Hunting.
Tips
Train Mining and Forging together. The Orebar Potion makes this seamless. Follow the Mining - Guide for optimal ore spots while your Forging levels up passively.
Stockpile Coal. Coal is the universal fuel for smelting. Mine extra Coal whenever you can, especially before tackling Promethium and above.
Stockpile Woodchips. You will need thousands of Woodchips for Charcoal production once you start smelting Promethium+. Chop trees regularly and bank the Woodchips.
Use Bulk Smelt at the Furnace when manually smelting to process multiple bars at once.
The Furnace and Anvils are both in the Mine (Anvils on the second floor, same area as the Charcoal Kiln). Plan your trips to do smelting, charcoal, and smithing together.
