This guide covers the fastest way to level Forging to max. Forging is closely tied to Mining since you need ores to smelt, so consider leveling both skills together (see Mining - Guide).
Overview
Forging XP comes from two sources: smelting ores into bars at the Furnace, and smithing bars into items at the Anvils. The most efficient training method at every tier is to smelt bars and then smith arrowheads, since arrowheads only cost 1 bar each and give the same (or better) XP per bar as any other recipe.
The general strategy is:
- Smelt Bronze Bars and smith Bronze Arrowheads from level 1 to 5.
- Switch to Iron Bars and Iron Arrowheads from level 5 to 15.
- Switch to Silver Bars and Silver Arrowheads from level 15 to 25.
- Switch to Gold Bars and Gold Arrowheads from level 25 to 50.
- Switch to Promethium Bars and Promethium Arrowheads from level 50 to 65.
- Switch to Titanium Bars and Titanium Arrowheads from level 65 to 75.
- Smelt Ancient Bars and smith Ancient Arrowheads from level 75+ for the best XP in the game.
XP Per Bar
Every smithing recipe within a tier gives the same XP per bar used, with one exception: Ancient Arrowheads give slightly more XP per bar than other Ancient recipes. This means arrowheads are always the best choice for pure XP since they only use 1 bar per craft.
| Bar | Smelt Level | Smelt XP | Smith Level (Arrows) | Smith XP (per 10 arrows) | XP/Bar (Smith) | Total XP/Bar (Smelt + Smith) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze Bar | 1 | 10 | 1 | 25 | 25 | 35 |
| Iron Bar | 5 | 25 | 5 | 45 | 45 | 70 |
| Silver Bar | 15 | 40 | 15 | 72 | 72 | 112 |
| Gold Bar | 30 | 60 | 25 | 107 | 107 | 167 |
| Promethium Bar | 50 | 150 | 40 | 184 | 184 | 334 |
| Titanium Bar | 65 | 250 | 50 | 348 | 348 | 598 |
| Ancient Bar | 75 | 500 | 60 | 988 | 988 | 1,488 |
Smelting Materials
Higher-tier bars require Coal, Charcoal, and in the case of Ancient, a Lava Bucket. Make sure you have enough fuel before starting a smelting session.
| Bar | Ore | Coal | Charcoal | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze Bar | 1 Copper | 1 | - | - |
| Iron Bar | 1 Iron | 1 | - | - |
| Silver Bar | 1 Silver | 2 | - | - |
| Gold Bar | 1 Gold | 3 | - | - |
| Promethium Bar | 1 Promethium | 10 | 5 | - |
| Titanium Bar | 1 Titanium | 25 | 10 | - |
| Ancient Bar | 1 Ancient Ore | 50 | 25 | 1 Lava Bucket |
Phase 1: Bronze and Iron (Levels 1-15)
Start by mining Coal and Copper on the first floor of the Mine, then smelt Bronze Bars at the Furnace. Smith Bronze Arrowheads at the Anvils on the second floor for 35 total XP per bar (10 smelt + 25 smith).
At level 5, switch to Iron Bars (1 Iron + 1 Coal). Iron rocks are found on the second floor of the Mine. Smith Iron Arrowheads for 70 total XP per bar. Continue through to level 15.
During this phase, you may want to smith a few useful items along the way such as an Iron Pickaxe, Iron Axe, or Iron Knife for personal use. These give the same XP per bar as arrowheads, so there is no penalty for making them.
Phase 2: Silver and Gold (Levels 15-50)
At level 15, switch to Silver Bars (1 Silver + 2 Coal) and Silver Arrowheads for 112 XP per bar. Silver rocks are found on the second floor of the Mine and at the Beach.
At level 25, you can start smithing Gold Arrowheads, though you need level 30 to smelt Gold Bars. If you have Gold Bars from other sources (trading, the Orebar Potion), you can start arrowheads early. Gold ore is found on the second floor of the Mine, the Sewer, and at the Beach, and requires 3 Coal per bar.
This is also where you unlock Necklaces (level 20+), which give 107 XP each from a Gold Bar and an Enchanted Gem. If you have spare gems from Mining, necklaces are a good use for them.
At level 50, you unlock Treasure Chest Keys (535-635 XP each, 5 Gold Bars). These are useful if you have Treasure Maps but are not efficient for pure XP grinding compared to arrowheads.
Phase 3: Promethium (Levels 50-65)
At level 50, switch to Promethium Bars for 334 total XP per bar. Promethium requires 10 Coal and 5 Charcoal per bar, so you will need a large supply of both.
Getting Charcoal: Charcoal is made at the Charcoal Kiln on the second floor of the Mine. Each Charcoal costs 50 Woodchips and 600 Coins. Woodchips come from Woodcutting as a byproduct of chopping any tree. Stock up on Woodchips before starting Promethium smelting.
Promethium ore is found in the Mine and in Hell. Smith Promethium Arrowheads (level 40, which you already have) for the best XP. You can also forge useful upgrades during this phase: Promethium Pickaxe and Promethium Axe at level 40, or a Promethium Sword at level 55.
Phase 4: Titanium (Levels 65-75)
At level 65, switch to Titanium Bars for 598 total XP per bar. Titanium requires 25 Coal and 10 Charcoal per bar, so fuel costs are significant. Titanium ore is only found in Hell and from Meteors.
Smith Titanium Arrowheads (level 50) for the best XP. As with Promethium, you may want to forge a Titanium Pickaxe (level 50) or Titanium Axe (level 50) for your own use.
Phase 5: Ancient (Level 75+)
At level 75, you unlock Ancient Bar smelting for 1,488 total XP per bar (500 smelt + 988 arrowheads). This is by far the best Forging XP in the game and is what you will use all the way to max level.
Ancient Bars require 50 Coal, 25 Charcoal, and 1 Lava Bucket per bar on top of the Ancient Ore itself. The fuel requirements are steep:
Getting Lava Buckets: You need a Graphite Bucket (crafted from 10 Graphite at level 70 Crafting) which you fill with lava. Graphite is mined in the Volcano at level 70 Mining. Lava Buckets are consumed when smelting, so you need one per Ancient Bar.
Ancient Ore is found in the Volcano (after the Volcanic Bridge Quest) and from Meteors.
Ancient forging also requires the Titanium version of any item you want to smith (except arrowheads). Since arrowheads do not have this requirement and give the best XP per bar (988 vs 898 for other Ancient recipes), they are the clear best choice.
Useful Potions
Several Brewing potions help with Forging:
Orebar Potion - Automatically smelts Copper, Iron, Silver, and Gold ore into bars as you mine them. This skips the Furnace step entirely for lower-tier ores and effectively trains Mining and Forging at the same time. Very useful during early-to-mid levels.
Huge Sandsmelt Potion - Smelts Sand into Glass 25 times faster. Glass smelting only gives 2 XP each so it is not efficient for leveling, but this potion is useful if you need large amounts of Glass for Vials (Brewing).
Tips
Use Bulk Smelt at the Furnace to smelt multiple bars at once rather than one at a time. This saves a lot of clicking.
The Anvils are on the second floor of the Mine, the same area as the Charcoal Kiln. Plan your trips to do smelting, charcoal, and smithing in one visit.
Arrowheads are tradable and useful for Archery training. You can sell them to other players or use them yourself if you also train Archery.
If you are leveling Mining and Forging together, the Mining - Guide covers the most efficient ore training. The ores you mine can be directly smelted and smithed using this guide.
Necklaces require Enchanted Gems and a Gold Bar. If you have gems from Mining, forging necklaces is a good way to use them since they provide useful Accuracy bonuses and 107 Forging XP each.
